The Kecksburg Acorn
A fireball was seen across several states and Canada. Kecksburg residents reported something came down in the woods, and some later said they saw soldiers remove an acorn-shaped object with strange markings. Officials said the search found nothing.

The ledger
What the record shows, what people say, and the best explanation available so far.
What's documented
- The fireball was widely seen and is well documented.
- A journalist's FOIA lawsuit against NASA in the 2000s produced some records but no object.
What's claimed
- A craft, or a Soviet probe, was secretly recovered.
Best explanation so far
Astronomers concluded the fireball was a meteor. The Soviet Kosmos 96 probe theory fails because orbital tracking shows it reentered hours earlier. The object stories grew mostly after decades.
