Students and staff at Westall High School and the neighboring primary school said a silvery object came down behind trees in a nearby field, then rose and left, possibly chased by small planes. Many witnesses still tell the same story decades later.

Best explanation so far
Researchers have proposed a balloon from a joint Australian–U.S. high-altitude research program that was launching from the area in 1966. It is a plausible fit but not proven.
