Betty & Barney Hill

Catalog FG-028When September 19–20, 1961Where White Mountains, New Hampshire

The first widely publicized alien abduction story, recovered under hypnosis.

Driving home from Canada, the Hills saw a light that seemed to follow their car, and they later felt they had lost time. Betty had vivid dreams of being taken aboard a craft. In 1964 psychiatrist Benjamin Simon hypnotized them separately, and both described being examined by beings. John Fuller's 1966 book 'The Interrupted Journey' made them famous. Betty drew a 'star map' she said she was shown.

The ledger

What the record shows, what people say, and the best explanation available so far.

What's documented

  • They reported the light to the Air Force soon after.
  • The hypnosis session recordings survive.

What's claimed

  • They were abducted and examined.
  • The star map points to the Zeta Reticuli system.

Best explanation so far

Dr. Simon himself thought the abduction story was more likely a shared dream. Critics note memories recovered under hypnosis are unreliable, and some details resemble a TV episode that aired shortly before Barney's session. The light may have been Jupiter or a satellite.
