Rendlesham Forest

Catalog FG-055When December 26–28, 1980Where RAF Woodbridge, Suffolk, England

Britain's most famous case, with a deputy base commander's memo and audio tape.

U.S. Air Force security police at a British base saw lights in the forest and went to investigate. Some later described a small craft with markings. Two nights later, deputy base commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt led a team into the woods, recorded a running audio tape, and measured what he described as elevated radiation. His memo to the UK Ministry of Defence was released through FOIA in 1983.

What the record shows, what people say, and the best explanation available so far.

What's documented

  • The Halt memo and Halt's audio tape exist.
  • UK Ministry of Defence files on the case have been released.

What's claimed

  • A craft landed and was examined by servicemen.

Best explanation so far

Skeptics note the flashing light lines up with the Orford Ness lighthouse and that a bright fireball crossed southern England the first night. Witness stories also grew a lot over time. Supporters say that does not cover everything.
